Issues concerning the ethnographic area of activity of Ukrainian museums during Soviet times, including regional ones, are relevant for the development of national ethnological science and museology. In particular, in available scientific publications, telling about the work of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore, there is no complete information on the specified activity. Therefore, the goal is to give the fullest possible coverage to the history of the formation and functioning of the ethnographic activity of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore during the period of 1939-1989. In accordance with the goal, the analysis of the influence of totalitarian regime museum policy on the existence of the Department of Ethnography and Folk Crafts of the Volyn Museum of Local History was carried out, and the destiny of ethnographic collection was determined; the content and level of scientific fullness in the mentioned period of museum funds by the specimens of folk culture were observed; their place in the museum's that time exposition-exhibitional and scientific-educational activity was showed.
The period from 1939 to 1989 was the longest in the history of the Department of Ethnography and Folk Crafts of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore. It was marked by the domination of the Soviet socio-political system. This had a certain affect on the work carried out in the above-mentioned direction. On the basis of the material retrieved and analyzed by the author, it was found that the most significant factors that influenced the ethnographic activity of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore during the specified period were the following: the subordination of museum policy to the requirements of the communist totalitarian system, the elimination of the department of ethnography in the organization of the museum, the sharing of the ethnographic collection between different funds, curtailing of the study and popularization of the authentic folk culture of Volynian and Polischuk people, weak staff and financial support of that area. At the same time, that period was characterized by the continuation of the accumulation of ethnographic specimens, which in the 1970s and 1980s became the subject of studies for well-known Ukrainian specialists. Important role in supporting the functioning of the ethnographic area of activity of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore also played core and museum institutions of Ukraine, thanks to which its methodological and scientific support was carried out. The mentioned positive aspects were among those important factors that led to the creation of the Department of Ethnography and Folk Crafts of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore in 1989 – one of the structural divisions of the institution, which has been performing a purposeful activity since then.
