Abstract
Academy of Sciences (AUAS) for Study of Pysankarstvo in Kyiv Region
Pysankarstvo (pysanka painting), like other types of arts and crafts, despite the periods of neglecting and temporary suspension of its development in the Soviet period of Ukrainian history, today is retaining its stylistic and regional features.
The current study of local lore and ethnographic heritage of the regions, studying of material and spiritual culture of Ukrainian people, and understanding the need of preserving and popularizing the achievements in these spheres are rather relevant.
The goal of the paper is to analyze archival collections of documents that uncover or provide information on pysankarstvo in Kyiv region, making pysankas, and their use in rituals. The main objective is to introduce archival collections of documents into scientific circulation by publishing certain documents unknown to the general public and unpublished earlier; enriching of source and historiographical base.
Among the versatile materials of the «Ethnographic Commission» fund there is information about: the wedding, funeral, housekeeping; poems, carols, schedrivkas, proverbs, sayings, fairy tales, traditional stories, riddles, folk calendar, beliefs, etc. recorded in Kyiv region in 1912-1930s; also certain information about the celebration of Easter, making krashankas and pysankas in various settlements is stored here.
As an addition to the analyzed material, exist two entire documents, recorded in Kyiv region, which are stored in the funds of the «Ethnographic Commission» of M.T. Rylskyi and Vadym Shcherbakivskyi Institute of Art Studies, Folklore Studies and Ethnology (IMFE) in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It should be noted that these are synchronous handwritten documents describing more widely the existence of pysankarstvo in this region, however, the previous ones testify to its existence in Right-Bank Ukraine, while these two – in Left-Bank Ukraine. The sources not known to the general public confirm pysankas painting and their use during Easter custom-ritual traditions, in the beliefs of Ukrainians in the 20s of the 20th century in this ethnographical region.
Thus, the paper considers, analyzes and makes public archival materials of M.T. Rylskyi Institute of Art Studies, Folklore Studies and Ethnology and the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine related to the customs and rituals of spring religious festivals in Kyiv region. Much information on pysankarstvo can be found in the archival funds.
