Abstract

The author of the paper aims to try to analyze issues related to the legitimation of women’s political rights, analyzing policy documents of various organizations and parties in the early 20th century in the Russian Empire.

Just progressive women initiated the creation of women’s organizations and laid the groundwork for the rising of the issue of equal women participation in political life. The public discussion of the legislative granting of voting rights to women lasted for a long time and at various social levels, most actively in political parties, public organizations, and in the legislative bodies. Opponents of women’s suffrage argued that by exercising suffrage, women would introduce feminine traits into public life, thus threaten family life, and therefore the very existence of the state. Proponents believed that women would have a positive impact on politics, making it less aggressive. Among the first political parties to include the demand for women’s equality in their programs were the Revolutionary Ukrainian Party, the Russian Social Democratic Workers’ Party, the Russian Party of Socialists Revolutionaries, and the Ukrainian People’s Party.

In the materials of various forums of the All-Russian Peasant Union, the opinion was expressed about the importance of giving women equal rights with men, especially in those areas where the male population is engaged in «seasonal occupation and only women stay at home».
