Formation of Archaeological Collection of Volyn Museum of Local Lore in 1939-1991
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to retrace and characterize the process of formation of the archaeological collection of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore in the Soviet period, to determine the principal ways of its formation, and to give a brief description of the main sets.
Scientific novelty. The museological component of archaeological research is revealed in the example of the archaeological collection of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore; information on the formation of the archaeological collection of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore in the Soviet period is found and systematized, which made it possible to trace and comprehensively characterize the peculiarities of its formation; negative trends, affecting the formation of the Museum’s archaeological collection, are analyzed.
Methodology: The research is based on generally accepted theoretical and methodological principles with the application of the principles of historicism, objectivity, and systematicity, which made it possible to study thoroughly the problem and draw scientifically based logical conclusions.
Conclusions. Relying on the conducted research, it can be claimed that active archaeological work on the territory of Volyn oblast during the Soviet period led to a significant quantitative and qualitative growth of the funds of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore. The institution gained a number of valuable, rare collections and complexes, which led to the growing interest in the archaeological collection on the part of scholars not only from Ukraine, but also from neighboring countries.
In the course of the presented material analysis, four main ways of forming the museum’s archaeological collection are found out: archaeological expeditions of academic institutions of the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR; excavations of Volyn scholars; research conducted by archaeologists of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore; presenting of accidental finds by local residents, historians, and local experts.
Chronological periods and archaeological cultures, the research of which was a priority in the Soviet period, are named. The main negative trends that influenced the formation of the archaeological collection of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore are revealed.
The conducted research will be part of a comprehensive analysis of the formation of the archaeological collection of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore over all the years of its existence. In the future, the materials could be used to outline the characteristic features of the formation of funds of Volyn oblast museum network and compare them with such processes in other regions.
