Keywords: Petro Trygub, Poltava State Pedagogical Institute named after V.G. Korolenko, researcher-historian, scientific and pedagogical activity, Faculty of History

Abstract

The purpose of the research paper is to study the ‘Poltava period’ (1971-1982) of the life and scientific path of the researcher-historian, educator Petro Trygub, to analyze his professional (career) growth and development as a researcher-historian, methodologist, and educator; to identify the priorities of his historical interests, and to clarify the results of his studies.

The scientific novelty of the study is in uncovering the pedagogical, scientific, research, and public activities of the renowned researcher-historian Petro Trygub during his stay in Poltava from 1971 to 1982, based on a wide range of sources.

Conclusions. Petro Trygub belongs to the generation of Soviet and Ukrainian historians and researchers whose formation occurred during the 1970s – 1980s, and the rethinking of his views occurred during the period of Ukraine’s independence.

Working at the Poltava State Pedagogical Institute named after V.G. Korolenko, Petro Trygub worked his way up from a senior lecturer, associate professor, to a senior research fellow of the Department of History of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR, Dean of the Faculty of History, which is indicative of his professional growth and the maturation of his leadership skills.

Petro Trygub went down in the history of the Poltava State Pedagogical Institute named after V.G. Korolenko as a talented methodologist and lecturer, teaching the Methods of Teaching History at School, a basic discipline for students – future teachers. He managed to train worthy successors, to whom he subsequently passed on his course.

The researcher-historian’s field of scientific interest is the period of 1917-1918, associated with the establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine (all these works are morally outdated and require rethinking, but reflect the corresponding stage of development of historical science).

During the ‘Poltava period,’ Petro Trygub proves himself as a gifted lecturer, head of a student club, curator, and public activist. His personal traits, including discipline, meticulousness, self-discipline, and responsibility, become fundamental to his work.

The researcher had to live and work in the challenging conditions of the ‘Brezhnev stagnation’ and ‘Gorbachev perestroika.’ The ideological prescriptions and party conjuncture of the eras affected the sphere of scientific priorities of the historian. During the period of Ukraine’s independence, Petro Trygub had the strength to rethink his views, objectively examine the historical process, change the priorities of scientific research, establish his own scientific school, and train highly qualified researcher-historians and teachers.
