Abstract

The purpose of the research paper is to reconstruct and analyze the scientific and pedagogical activities of Professor Petro Trygub during his work at the Mykolaiv State Pedagogical Institute (1982-1997), to highlight his contribution to the development of Ukrainian historical regional history studies and the formation of his own historical school.

The scientific novelty is in reconstruction of P. Trygub’s life path during the specified period, achieved through the analysis of a wide range of archival documents, supplementing the specified problem field with new data and creating a more holistic picture of the researcher’s contribution to the development of Ukrainian historical science.

Conclusions. Work at the Mykolaiv State Pedagogical Institute is divided into two periods: the first (1982-1989) and the second (1990-1997). During the first period of activity, which can be defined as a period of adaptation and formation, Petro Trygub successfully established relationships with new colleagues. He organized the departmental staff to ensure the effective implementation of the educational process, strengthened the department’s scientific component, and defended his doctoral dissertation. At that time, he participated in numerous conferences of the republican and all-Union level, and established fruitful scientific ties with leading historians of the USSR. It was during this period that his scientific interest in historical regional history studies began to fully reveal itself, resulting in the organization and holding of two republican regional history studies conferences on the basis of the Mykolaiv State Pedagogical Institute, which had a significant resonance among the scientific community.

The second period (1990-1997) was marked by the beginning of the establishing of its own scientific school and the training of a galaxy of future young scholars. It was the graduates of the Pedagogical Institute who laid the foundation for the scientific school of historical regional history studies in the South of Ukraine. For his scientific and pedagogical activities, the development of the regional history studies movement, and the preservation of the national historical and cultural heritage, the Professor received the title of ‘Honored Worker of Public Education of Ukraine.’ In 1997, due to financial constraints, he had to resign from the Mykolaiv State Pedagogical Institute and join the Mykolaiv Branch of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

It can be safely stated that the formation of P. Trygub as a regional history studies researcher and founder of his own scientific school occurred precisely during the period under study.
