Abstract

The purpose of the research paper is to study the historical and agrarian components of the scientific legacy, presented, in particular, in the form of reviews of dissertations on the agrarian history of Ukraine, scientific publications, and speeches by P. Trygub at symposia on agrarian history.

The scientific novelty is in obtaining new knowledge from the creative legacy of P. Trygub, in clarifying the already available information on the issues studied in the researcher’s scientific legacy, and in determining the scope of works on agrarian history.

Conclusions. The figure of Petro Trygub, along with his scientific legacy, particularly in historical and agrarian studies, is an important component of modern Ukrainian scientific and historical discourse. The significance of the researcher’s figure and his intellectual creative activity is confirmed by the great contribution that the Professor made to the formation of a regional scientific school, the local history movement, and the study of problems in agrarian history.

Historical and agrarian legacy occupies a prominent place in the scholar’s scientific work. It is represented by 31 scientific papers published between 1971 and 2011; eight official opponent’s reviews of five candidate’s and three doctoral dissertations, which thematically related to the agrarian history of Ukraine; the Professor’s membership in the organizing committees of all-Ukrainian symposia on agrarian history, his speeches with presentations during plenary and sectional meetings at these forums.

Chronologically, the thematic field of historical and agrarian studies covered by the scholar spans the last quarter of the 18th century to the 1950s. At the same time, most of his works are devoted to the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century.

Thematically, P. Trygub’s historical and agrarian legacy concerned numerous issues on the Ukraine’s agrarian history among which: the social and economic evolution of large landowners and large landholdings; the place, role, and significance of the peasantry in the social and economic structure of Ukrainian and imperial societies at the beginning of the 20th century; the peculiarities of the development of the peasantry of Southern Ukraine from 1921 to 1929; the collective farm system in the Ukrainian countryside from 1934 to 1939; the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in the rural areas of Southern Ukraine; the attitude of the councils of workers’, soldiers’ and peasants’ deputies to the issues of Ukrainian statehood during the national and democratic revolution of 1917-1921.

Funding. The article is based on the results of the fundamental research ‘Socio-cultural space of Ukraine in the second half of the nineteenth century – the first third of the twentieth century: the peasant world’ (state registration number: 0123U101600) with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
